TEACHER

My Background

I’ve been teaching privately for over twenty-five years and have guided more than 800 students in achieving their musical goals. My background includes formal university training and world class private instruction, as well as being a professional musician for thirty-five years.

In addition to teaching beginning and intermediate students, some top acts that my professional students have performed or recorded with include Chaka Khan, Isaac Hayes, MC Lyte, Taylor Dane, Edgar Winter, Doug E. Fresh and many more.

Basic Philosophy

The elements of music are very specific, whereas an individual’s goals can vary widely. My quest as a teacher is to teach the student sitting before me by discovering exactly what it is he or she wants to accomplish and then create a program for them to follow. What we do is determined by the following: 1) their personal goals, 2) what I know they need to do in order to reach those goals and 3) discovering the level they need to start at, then giving them clear instructions leading to their goals.

Some students have taken a lesson or two to straighten out something they wanted help with whereas most students have studied with me for years in order to reach a certain level of proficiency. It all depends on what a person wants to achieve.

The elements of music are the same regardless of the style. Rock, classical, jazz, funk and any style you can think of, all use the same notes; they are just played differently. Because of this, all students will most likely have a certain amount of “basics” on their lessons and if really wanting to advance should stabilize this arena. Combine these factors with a person’s experience level, or lack of, and each tailored program smoothly guides a person to their goals. Whereas musical elements are finite—creative applications are unlimited.

Playing and writing music to your personal standard is truly wonderful. It is also quite doable when someone has the right materials to apply and invests some time into doing so.

I mainly work with older teens and adults, but most any age could work. I’m exceptionally good at rehabilitating the adult who “use to play,” who always wanted to but never did, is already playing and wants to take it the next level, just wants to start for whatever reason, or has some experience with music but has lose ends that need to be put together.

Rates

Lessons are $60 an hour and $35 per ½ hour. There is a 10% discount when paying two months (eight lessons) in advance for weekly lessons. It is advisable to pay for at least eight lessons at a time because it stabilizes your commitment as well as stabilizes me being here for you. You have goals to achieve—let’s do it.

Personalized Music Lessons

“Marty’s teaching style is by far the most logical,
approachable and motivating I’ve encountered in
all my musical training. I received a college degree
in music and had been trained to death.

Marty has rekindled my passion for music.
By listening to my goals and directly working with my interests,
he has reminded me of what music is all about. Practicing isn’t
a chore anymore; it’s something I look forward to every day.”

Brian S.
Bass

“As a novice pianist I find that my lessons with Marty
are very different than other lessons I have taken.
I really enjoy the musical education that leads to
playing the songs I actually care to play.
And the ear training and theory will allow me to
play with other musicians.”

Dave P.
Piano

"Marty Buttwinick is the type of teacher that is
quick to the point. No time is wasted. He taught
me for four years and I thought I was learning to
play the guitar and found out later I was given the
knowledge to play any instrument. I picked up the
piano years later and I had all the understanding
I needed to play. This is an amazing way of teaching.
Thank you Marty for the experience!"

Michael Thomason
Guitar - Guitar Maker

"I didn’t know what to expect when I started with you
and I’m really glad that I did. Music theory can be so dry,
but you connected it to my songs, handled my questions
and made it fun. I really like this and am excited!"
